Thesis Title: MIGRATION AND LAND USECHANGE:A CASE STUDY INNANG RONG,BURIRAM PROVINCE.
Advisor: SUREEPORN PUNPUING
Abstract:

The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between land use and migration. The theory of Multiphasic Response by Kingsley Davis is used to explain the phenomena. It was expected that migration in households would be related to the reduction of household land area and land for cultivation. Land use was considered in terms of area, ownership and activities. This study was based on data from "The Community-Based Integrated Rural Development Evaluation Project 1984" and "The Demographic Responses to a Changing Environment in Nang Rong 1994". Qualitative data was derived from seven in-depth interviews of households in the study area. Descriptive statistics and Logistic Regression analysis were employed. The unit of analysis was a household. The findings show that between 1984 and 1994, the number of children aged less than 12 years and the number of member labor force age per household decreased while the number of elderly, members with high education, non-agricultural occupations and migrants including male, female and remitting migrant per household increased. However, landless households increased from 3% to 27% while households with 26 rai of land or more decreased from 36% in 1984 to 12% in 1994. Migration in households as surveyed in 1984 resulted in less household owned land and cultivated land in 1994. The number of children and members of labor force age per household related to an increasing area of household owned land. The numbers of elderly and migrants related to a decreasing area of household owned land. The numbers of children and members with non-agricultural occupations was associated with increase in the area of land for cultivation. The number of members of labor force age, elderly and remitting migrants was related to the reduction of land for cultivation. The number of children and member with non-agricultural occupations was related to an increasing size of rented land for cultivation. Besides, households with children (age 0-12) and labor force member in 1984 had increasing household land in 1994 while household with elderly had decreasing land in 1994. Households with migration in 1984 owned less land and had less land for cultivation in 1994. Changes in land ownership during 1984 to 1994 were through squatting, inheritance and trading. The main activity on the land was rice cultivation. It is recommended that agriculture courses be added to the compulsory curriculum to reduce out-migration. This may induce land development and increase land utilization.
